During our January Summit Conversation in Miami, Dr. Donna Shalala, President of the University of Miami, offered her thoughts on the need for health care reform in order to address the current health care crisis. We were glad to have her participate in the Summit and she certainly had some interesting things to say. While Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Shalala worked to make health insurance available to an estimated 3.3 million children through the creation of the State Children’s Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP), raised child immunization rates to the highest levels in history, led major reforms of the Food and Drug Administration’s drug approval process and food safety system, revitalized the National Institutes of Health, and directed a major management and policy reform of Medicare. Watch how Dr. Shalala frames the challenges ahead for achieving reform:

Be sure to check back tomorrow for comments from Dr. Ken Thorpe, America’s Agenda Sr. Director for Policy.
